A cinema for every taste

Sometimes you just need to step out of reality for a couple of hours. For me, there is no better way to do that than by settling into a darkened cinema and letting a story unfold. Watching films in the theatre is the ultimate escape, a chance to lose yourself in a story, whether you are with friends or enjoying some solo time. And Amsterdam's cinema scene offers a fantastic array of options for just that experience.

My Top Picks: Lab111, Studio K, and Kriterion

From blockbuster chains like Pathé to cultural hubs like the FilmHallen and the unique EYE Film Museum, there is a venue to suit every taste. Personally, I have explored six different cinemas in my time here, and each one offers a distinct atmosphere. But my absolute favorites, the ones that I keep coming back to, are Lab111, Studio K, and the Kriterion. For a more relaxed atmosphere, Studio K is a must. This smaller cinema boasts a cozy bar, perfect for a pre- or post-film drink.

No Popcorn? A Unique Cinema Experience

One thing to know is that most cinemas in the city (apart from Pathé) do not sell popcorn. Yeah, I know—who doesn't eat popcorn at the cinema? Well, it was my first time experiencing that and I must admit that it makes the room quieter! I am not saying that the Dutch don't snack at the movies, just that freshly made popcorn isn't part of it. You can usually buy packaged chips, chocolate, and nuts, as well as drinks like tap beer, coffee, and wine.

How to Save on Cinema Tickets

Tickets to the cinema in Amsterdam can be expensive, so saving money is always a plus. The best way to do this is with the Cineville pass. This €19-a-month membership grants you free access to participating cinemas all over the Netherlands, a fantastic deal if you plan to see more than three films a month. While the Rialto Cinema is conveniently located in the NU building at VU, it is not free. However, your Cineville pass will get you in, making it perfect for a quick escape between classes or a relaxing evening after a late lecture.

Cinemas Still on My List

Other cinemas I've heard amazing things about and are at the top of my own list to visit include the Pathé Tuschinski and The Movies.  I haven't had a chance to check them out yet, but I've heard they're fantastic, especially their art-deco interiors.

I hope this has given you some inspiration for your own Amsterdam cinema adventures!

If you're looking for a community of fellow film enthusiasts, the VU has a group where cinema fans gather to watch screenings, share events, and discuss films. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or just want to chat more about movies!
